Joseph Powell, PhD

Joseph Powell, PhD, is an associate professor and a leading biomedical researcher and statistical geneticist. He completed his postgraduate degrees at Edinburgh University following his PhD in 2010. In 2015, he founded his own group at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience where he pioneered the use of single cell sequencing. In 2018, Dr. Powell was recruited to head the newly launched Garvan-Weizmann Centre for Cellular Genomics, where he has established leading research programs in both fundamental and translational research across neurobiology, stem cells, oncology, and immunology. Dr. Powell’s research has been published in the highest impact journals, with first and senior author papers in Nature, Nature Genetics, Cell Stem Cell, Genome Research, Genome Biology, and the American Journal of Human Genetics. Dr. Powell’s contributions have been recognised with numerous awards, including being the youngest ever recipient of the Commonwealth Health Minister’s Medal, and receiving the NHMRC Research Excellence Medal.
