Biography
Iro is a trained neurologist and senior researcher at the University of Crete, with a focus on neurodegenerative disorders and aging. She obtained her medical degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, where she also completed an MSc in Psychiatry and Mental Health Promotion. She earned her PhD on the genetics of Parkinson’s disease at the University of Crete under the supervision of Prof. C. Spanaki, Prof. S. Scholz, and Prof. Xiromerisiou, in collaboration with the NINDS and GP2.
Following the resumption of her neurology training at the University General Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, she continued her clinical and research work in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders at King’s College London under the supervision of Prof. K. Ray Chaudhuri. She is currently employed as a senior researcher in the Laboratory of Neurology at the University of Crete, Greece.
In this role, she has established a well-characterized cohort of patients with Parkinson’s disease and controls, including comprehensive clinical and genetic data. She has also developed strong expertise in R programming, biostatistics, and regression modeling. In addition, she has contributed to projects on digital biomarkers and virtual reality–based rehabilitation in Parkinson’s disease and has authored multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
More recently, she joined the European Academy of Neurology CoCoCare program to further enhance her skills in systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and clinical guideline development. Having recently completed her PhD, she is currently planning the next steps in her career and is particularly interested in pursuing further training opportunities in genetics and neurodegenerative disorders
