Biografía

Iro is a trained neurologist and a senior researcher in the University of Crete, with a focus on the genetics of neurodegenerative disorders and ageing. She obtained her medical degree at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, where she also completed a MSc in Mental Health and Preventive Psychiatry; her thesis focused on geriatric psychiatry, dementia, and depression. After resuming her neurology training at the University General Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece, she continued her clinical and research work in PD and Movement Disorders at King’s College London, under the supervision of Prof. K. Ray Chaudhuri. The COVID-19 pandemic altered her career trajectory, leading her back to Greece, where she worked as a clinician and began a PhD on the genetics of PD on the island-based population of Crete, under the supervision of Prof. C. Spanaki and Prof. G. Xiromerisiou, in collaboration with the NINDS, under the supervision of Prof. S. Scholz, the Changeing Excellence Hub (University of Coimbra), and GP2. During her PhD, she established a well-characterized cohort of PD patients and controls with comprehensive clinical and genetic data, while gaining experience in R programming, biostatistics, and regression modeling. She has also contributed to sub-projects on digital biomarkers and rehabilitation using virtual reality in PD, and has authored multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Most recently, she joined the EAN CoCoCare programme to further enhance her skills in systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and clinical guideline development. As she has recently completed her PhD, she is actively planning her next steps and is eager to pursue new training opportunities, particularly in the field of genetics.
