Yun Joong Kim, MD, PhD

Yun Joong Kim, MD, PhD, is a Professor of neurology in the Department of Neurology at Yonsei University College of Medicine. He graduated with a medical degree from Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea, and currently works at the Center for Neurodegenerative Disorders in Yongin Severance Hospital of Yonsei University College of Medicine. Dr. Kim completed his movement disorders fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. A.E. Lang at the University of Toronto and postdoctoral training in Dr. M. DiFiglia’s laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School. He is a founding member of the Korean Movement Disorders Society (KMDS) and served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Movement Disorders published by KMDS, as well as the president of KMDS in 2018-2019.
Dr. Kim’s main research interests are genetics/genomics of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other hereditary movement disorders. He focuses on the discovery of new genes/alleles for PD, deep phenotyping, and genotype-phenotype correlation of hereditary movement disorders. He is also interested in systems biology research to understand the pathogenesis of PD by integrating diverse Mendelian genes for hereditary parkinsonism in the multiple layers of genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data. Dr. Kim has published a series of original articles demonstrating the contribution of hereditary parkinsonism genes (PARK and non-PARK genes) to the pathogenesis of PD in gene expression layers and genomic layers. He was awarded the 2017-2018 Original Research Article of the Year Award from the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society for his work on this topic.
