Patrick Alfryn Lewis, PhD

Biography
Patrick A. Lewis studied for a BS in biochemistry at the University of Manchester (UK), which included a year working at the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, researching the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease. After graduating with honors in 2001, he joined the prion unit at the Medical Research Council Institute of Neurology, University College London (UCL), where he completed a doctorate examining the molecular characteristics of the protein that causes scrapie. Dr. Lewis then joined the National Institute on Aging as a visiting fellow, conducting research into the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease linked to mutations in the LRRK2 gene. Continuing his work on LRRK2, Dr. Lewis went on to lead research groups at the UCL Institute of Neurology and the University of Reading School of Pharmacy before being appointed professor of neuroscience at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, in 2020.
