Biography
Professor Sulev Koks (MD, PhD, FFSc (RCPA)) is an internationally established medical researcher and professor at Murdoch University, Perth, WA. His research focuses on genomic pathology and genomic medicine of Parkinson’s Disease.
Sulev graduated with an MD in 1995 from the University of Tartu, Estonia. He completed his PhD in molecular biomedicine in 1999 at the same university. In 2018, Sulev moved to Australia, where he established a new research group focused on studying Parkinson’s disease in Western Australia. He is currently a professor and the Director of the Medical Genomics Laboratory at Murdoch University. His primary research centres on the genome’s dark matter, specifically the role of repetitive and transposable elements in complex diseases and neurodegeneration. The main tools he employs are whole-genome and whole-transcriptome sequencing using Oxford Nanopore technology. Additionally, he develops RNA-based therapeutics for Parkinson’s disease and has established a company dedicated to developing drugs for the condition.
