Biografía

Dr. Muhammad Ilyas’ research focuses on human genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis, variant interpretation, and precision medicine. His work is dedicated to understanding human genetic diversity and unraveling the molecular basis of rare and common neurological and inherited disorders, particularly in Pashtun populations. With extensive international research experience at University College London (United Kingdom), Harvard Medical School (USA), the Personal Genomics Institute (PGI), South Korea, and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), South Korea, Dr. Ilyas has established himself as one of Pakistan’s leading genomics researchers. His research integrates cutting-edge sequencing technologies with computational genomics to identify disease-causing variants, discover novel genes, and develop genomic resources for clinical and translational research.
Dr. Ilyas has pioneered several landmark initiatives in Pakistan. He led the sequencing of the first ethnic Pashtun genome, providing an important genomic reference for one of the world’s largest yet underrepresented populations. He also developed the Pakistan Genetic Variant Database (PGVdb), a national genomic resource designed to facilitate genetic diagnosis, disease research, and precision medicine. His research has identified numerous novel and pathogenic genetic variants associated with rare neurological and inherited disorders, significantly contributing to the understanding of disease genetics in South Asian populations. His scientific excellence has been recognized through numerous national and international honors, including the Science Communication Award, ASHG Award, Best Researcher Award, Research Excellence Award, and Best Paper Award, reflecting his commitment to advancing genomic science while effectively communicating its societal impact. Through pioneering research, international collaborations, scientific leadership, and dedicated mentorship, Dr. Muhammad Ilyas continues to advance genomics and precision medicine in Pakistan while contributing to the global understanding of human genetic diversity and rare genetic diseases.
